FAQs

Why should I use the Rx Refill app?

The Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Rx Refill mobile application (app) allows you to request refills of your refillable VA-dispensed prescriptions, scan your VA prescriptions to access prescription information, track VA prescription deliveries, view VA prescription history and access additional medication information on My HealtheVet from the convenience of your mobile device. The app works in conjunction with the Rx Refill feature within My HealtheVet, and refill requests submitted through the app or the My HealtheVet website are trackable using the app’s Track Delivery feature.

Who can use the Rx Refill app?

To use the Rx Refill app, you must have a My HealtheVet Premium Account, ID.me, or DS Logon Level 2 (Premium) Credentials. Rx Refill accesses your VA Electronic Health Record (EHR) and therefore requires secure credentials. If you do not have a ID.me, DS Logon Level 2 (Premium) or My HealtheVet Premium Account, or you are not sure, visit mobile.va.gov/login-information.

NOTE: If My HealtheVet is not operational at your facility, this app will not work.

What are the app’s main features?

The app has five main features, which include:

  • Refill VA Prescriptions – Shows a list of your VA prescriptions that are available for refill.
  • Scan your VA Prescription – Scans the square barcode on your prescription bottle to request refills, track delivery or view prescription details.
  • Track Delivery – Includes the status of mailed VA prescriptions.
  • Prescription History – Displays additional VA prescriptions, both refillable and not refillable, including a history of your refill requests.
  • Medication Information on My HealtheVet – Provides quick access to My HealtheVet links.

How do I refill my VA-dispensed prescriptions?

From either the Home screen or the Features drop-down list accessible on the horizontal navigation bar, tap Refill VA Prescriptions. A pop-up Important Information box will appear. Read the information and tap OK. You will go to the Refill VA Prescriptions screen that shows a list of your refillable VA prescriptions. Tap Sort to view the list alphabetically by medication name or facility, or chronologically by dispensed date. Tap the arrow next to the refill on your device and you will go to a Refill Details screen. Review the information on the Refill Details screen and tap Request Refill. A pop-up Refill Confirmation box will appear asking you to confirm that you would like to refill the medication. Tap Confirm if you would like to refill the medication, and the text in the pop-up box will change to “Submitting your refill request...” Then a pop-up Request Results box will appear to let you know if your VA prescription was successfully refilled. Tap OK to return to the home screen.

If your prescription label contains a square barcode, tap Scan your VA Prescription on the home screen. Follow the on-screen instructions and tap Scan Now. If a VA dispensed medication is detected, you will be redirected to the Scan Successful screen. Tap Request Refill and a pop-up Refill Confirmation box will appear. Tap Confirm, and the text in the pop-up box will change to “Submitting your refill request...” Then a pop-up Request Results box will appear to let you know if your refill request was successful. Tap OK to return to the home screen.

NOTE: If the VA prescription cannot be refilled, you will receive an error message with information on why the prescription was not refillable and guidance on getting assistance.

Can I refill multiple eligible prescriptions at one time?

Yes, you can refill multiple VA Prescriptions if multiple VA Prescriptions are available for refill. You can ‘Select All’ under Refill VA Prescriptions or select the radio button next to each prescription you would like to fill, then tap Request Refill(s). A pop-up Refill Confirmation box will appear. Tap Confirm to confirm that you would like to refill the selected medications and the text at the top of the pop-up box will change to “Submitting your refill request...” Then a pop-up Request Results box will confirm that the prescription refill requests were successful. Tap OK to return to the home screen.

Can all of my VA-dispensed prescriptions be refilled?

Not every VA-dispensed prescription can be refilled, such as some pain medications and certain narcotics. Only refillable VA prescriptions dispensed by a VA pharmacy can be requested. Some prescriptions with refills may not have the option to request a refill because not enough time has elapsed since you last requested a refill.

How do I determine if my VA prescription cannot be refilled?

If the VA prescription cannot be refilled, you will receive an error message with information on why the refill was not refillable and guidance on getting assistance.

How do I determine if my VA-dispensed prescriptions are eligible for refill?

To determine if your VA-dispensed prescription is eligible for refill, review the status. To review the status, from either the Home screen or the Features drop-down list accessible on the horizontal navigation bar, tap Refill VA Prescriptions. A pop-up Important Information box will appear. Read the information, then tap OK. You will go to the Refill VA Prescriptions screen that shows a list of refillable VA prescriptions. What does the prescription status mean?

  • Active - The VA prescription is available to be filled. If you have refills, you may request a refill of this VA prescription if it has a My HealtheVet Refill Status of Refillable.

  • Unknown - The status cannot be determined. Contact your VA care team when you need more of this VA prescription.

What should I expect after I’ve requested a VA prescription refill with the Rx Refill App?

After you’ve requested a refill of a prescription, the prescription’s status will change to Refill in Process. This shows that your VA pharmacy has received the request and is processing it. Your VA pharmacy will package your refill and mail it to you at the residence indicated in your file. See the fill date to learn when the medication will be ready to be mailed to you. The process of filling a refill request takes approximately 8-10 days.
